Lime plaster does not simply “dry”, it cures. Understanding this process is vital for ensuring the longevity and structural integrity of the plasterwork on your period property.
Modern gypsum plasters and cement set via a rapid, chemical reaction with water. Traditional non-hydraulic lime plaster (lime putty), however, sets through a process called carbonation.
When lime plaster is applied to a wall, it slowly absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) from the surrounding air. As it absorbs this CO2, it reverts back into limestone. This is a gradual, natural process. If the plaster dries out too quickly before it has had time to absorb enough CO2, it will become powdery, weak, and prone to cracking.
