How Long Does Lime Plaster Take to Cure?

A Guide to the Carbonation Process

When transitioning from modern building materials to traditional heritage methods, one of the biggest adjustments is the timeline. If you are used to modern gypsum plaster, which dries hard in a matter of days, the curing process of traditional lime plaster requires a shift in mindset.

Lime plaster does not simply “dry”, it cures. Understanding this process is vital for ensuring the longevity and structural integrity of the plasterwork on your period property.

Drying vs. Curing: The Carbonation Process

Modern gypsum plasters and cement set via a rapid, chemical reaction with water. Traditional non-hydraulic lime plaster (lime putty), however, sets through a process called carbonation.

When lime plaster is applied to a wall, it slowly absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) from the surrounding air. As it absorbs this CO2, it reverts back into limestone. This is a gradual, natural process. If the plaster dries out too quickly before it has had time to absorb enough CO2, it will become powdery, weak, and prone to cracking.

The Timeline: What to Expect

Because carbonation relies on environmental factors, there is no single, fixed timeframe for lime plaster to fully cure. However, you can generally expect the following timeline:

  • Initial Firming (1 to 3 Days): The plaster will lose its initial moisture and become firm to the touch. It is during this window that tradespeople will typically return to float and finish the surface.
  • Surface Curing (2 to 4 Weeks): The outer layer of the plaster will become hard enough to tentatively accept breathable finishes, such as a traditional limewash.
  • Deep Curing (Months to Years): The plaster will continue to harden deep within the wall structure for many months, slowly drawing in CO2 and strengthening over time.

How to Manage the Curing Process

To ensure your lime plaster cures correctly without shrinking or cracking, moisture management is essential.

  1. Control the Environment: Do not use artificial dehumidifiers or intense space heaters to speed up the process. This will violently draw moisture out of the plaster, halting the carbonation process entirely.
  2. Protect from Draughts: In the initial days after application, protect the fresh plaster from strong draughts, which can also cause premature drying.
  3. Mist the Walls: If the environment is particularly warm or dry, gently misting the walls with clean water using a spray bottle can keep the plaster damp enough to continue carbonating.
