The Complete Guide to Lime Render

Technical Lime Based Solutions

Breathable Finishes for Traditional and Modern Homes

Applying a high-quality lime render is one of the most effective ways to protect and enhance a building’s exterior. Unlike modern, impermeable cement renders that trap moisture and cause damp, traditional lime systems are highly breathable and naturally flexible. They allow structural movement without cracking and ensure that moisture can safely evaporate from solid brickwork, blockwork, and timber frames.

At Anglia Lime, we supply a comprehensive range of render systems designed for every substrate. Whether you are restoring a heritage property or seeking a sustainable, eco-friendly finish for a new build, choosing the correct render is essential for long-term performance.

Choosing the Right Lime Render System

Search intent for exterior finishes varies wildly, which is why we have categorised our systems based on the specific structural needs of your project:

  • Insulating Lime Render (THERMALime): If you are looking to improve the thermal efficiency of an older, solid-wall property or timber frame, THERMALime is a highly breathable, lightweight basecoat. It dramatically reduces heat loss and manages moisture movement perfectly.
  • Coloured Lime Render (Thermocromex): For a faster application on modern blockwork or prepared masonry, Thermocromex is a technical, one-coat render. It provides excellent waterproofing and comes pre-coloured, eliminating the need for ongoing masonry painting and maintenance.
  • Traditional Hydraulic & Non-Hydraulic Blends (MODLime & PURELime): For authentic heritage conservation, our standard dry and wet ready-mix basecoats provide the traditional elasticity and vapour permeability required for delicate, historic substrates.

Understanding the Application Process

A successful lime render relies entirely on correct specification and preparation. Applying harsh, inflexible materials to a breathable solid wall is the leading cause of spalling and timber rot.

When planning your exterior rendering project, keep these core principles in mind:

  • Substrate Preparation: The background must be clean, stable, and appropriately dampened to control suction. Any existing non-breathable barriers, such as acrylic paints or cement patching, must be fully removed.
  • The Coat System: Traditional applications typically follow a multi-coat system: a scratch coat (basecoat) to provide a structural key, followed by a flatter float coat, and finally a fine finish coat.
  • Curing Times: Lime is a live, reactive material. It cures slowly through carbonation and evaporation. You must protect fresh work from strong sunlight, drying winds, and frost, allowing sufficient drying time between coats (generally one day per millimetre of thickness).
