- Substrate Preparation: The background must be clean, stable, and appropriately dampened to control suction. Any existing non-breathable barriers, such as acrylic paints or cement patching, must be fully removed.
- The Coat System: Traditional applications typically follow a multi-coat system: a scratch coat (basecoat) to provide a structural key, followed by a flatter float coat, and finally a fine finish coat.
- Curing Times: Lime is a live, reactive material. It cures slowly through carbonation and evaporation. You must protect fresh work from strong sunlight, drying winds, and frost, allowing sufficient drying time between coats (generally one day per millimetre of thickness).
