Technical Lime Based Solutions
Upgrading the thermal efficiency of a solid-wall period property or historic building presents a major challenge. Modern, impermeable insulation materials trap moisture within traditional masonry, leading to structural damp, timber rot, and failing brickwork.
The Novaskin® Thermo Plus and Novaskin® Coating system solves this problem. It combines modern insulation performance with the vital vapor-permeability of traditional natural hydraulic lime (NHL).
This technical guide outlines system specifications, substrate preparation, and application methods to ensure a flawless, breathable thermal upgrade.
The system relies on a two-part application process designed to deliver maximum insulation values while maintaining the building’s natural moisture balance.
Novaskin® Thermo Plus (Insulating Basecoat): A lightweight, highly insulating lime mortar basecoat packed with advanced thermal aggregates. Formulated to replace thick layers of traditional mortar, it significantly reduces U-values across solid walls.
Novaskin® Coating (Protective Finish): A highly breathable, weatherproofing finish coat designed to shield the thermal basecoat from the elements while allowing interior vapor to escape seamlessly.
Novaskin® systems are engineered for traditional solid-wall construction but require careful surface preparation to guarantee a permanent bond.
1. Solid Brick & Stone Masonry
Preparation: Remove all existing gypsum plasters, cement renders, and modern plastic paints. Rake out loose mortar joints to a depth of 10mm–15mm.
Suction Control: Clean the substrate thoroughly to remove dust. Dampen highly porous brickwork with clean water before application to prevent the masonry from pulling water out of the fresh mix too quickly.
2. Timber Frame & Infill Panels
Preparation: Ensure timber studs are stable and structurally sound.
Carrier Systems: Install high-quality timber laths or Savolit boards across the framework. Secure panels with correct spacing using stainless steel fixings to prevent future background movement.
